My first book review will be on Between Shades Of Gray by Ruta Sepetys.
“Have you ever wondered what a human life is worth? That morning,
my brother’s was worth a pocket watch.” – Lina
This book is about a 15 year old girl named Lina who is separated from her father by the NKVD during world war two and forced to work in labour camps with her mom and her brother Jonas. One night Lina gets a bang on her door by the NKVD, and she doesn’t know what is going on. Lina’s mom tells her and her brother to quickly pack their suit case. When they are done packing they get jammed into cattle cars and taken to Siberia.
My favorite part of the book is when she figures out she has feelings for a 17 year old guy named Andrius at the labour camp. The author makes you feel like you are there watching them when they are talking to each other. She describes every little detail in the book.
This book is really sad because at the end of the book I figured out this was a true story. I highly recommend Between Shades of Gray to people who like to read sad stories based on true events or young adult books that have people fighting for there lives.
