The book I am going to review today is called Chomp, a fantastic novel written by Carl Hiaasen. Chomp is about a boy named Wahoo Cray, who’s father, Mickey Cray is a professional animal wrangler. Because of this, his backyard is filled is filled with snakes monkeys, turtles, raccoon’s, alligators, and many more! Until one day a dead iguana fell from a palm tree and hit his head. Once he got hauled into the hospital, the doctors had told him he had a serious concussion and told him to take it easy. But his injury has left him with double vision and terrible headaches. And so, people kept calling with new jobs, and Wahoo was forced to send the to other wranglers. Then one day Wahoo’s mother told him that the family’s saving account was almost drained, so she said that she as going to China. She said that some big American companies that had offices in China would hire Mrs.Cray to tutor their top executives, and said that they had learned Mandarin from some cheap audiotapes, and that the other day one of the big shots tried to compliment a government minister and accidently said that his face looked like a butt wart! Then one day Mickey Cray takes a job with a reality TV show calledExpedition Survival! a show starring Derek Badger, who is an “expert survivalist” on the show, but what Mickey doesn’t know is that Derek is actually a fake, and knows nothing about surviving in the wild. So once they were shooting the seen where Derek was supposed to swim across a pond to get to dry ground, there was supposed to be an alligator in the seen, but the alligator (named Alice) just stood still underwater. But once the gator emerged out of the water, Derek with no sense in mind, went on top of the alligator, but Alice was holding still. But once Derek lied down lengthwise along the alligators spine and tried to wrap his arms around her, Alice went crazy! She started thrashing and spinning like crazy. Derek had only lasted 3 full spins before he got launched into the air! Alice was still spinning in the water when Derek fell back in the part, but unluckily he fell down two Alice’s teeth got caught onto Derek’s khaki shorts, because of this he started spinning in unison with the alligator, while his production assistant, Raven Stark, was screaming and yelling for help, but no one knew what to do! But then Mickey Cray calmly took off his shoes and dove in into the pond. He grabbed the orange tinted hair of Derek Badger while the director ordered the camera man to keep the film rolling. Once Derek got out his crew carried him to his motor coach where they dried him off, bundled him in a fuzzy Expedition Survival!bathrobe and put him in bed. Once he got onto his bed, he blamed the director for what happened with the alligator accident, and practically fired him. But he had something to show him that might change his mind. He grabbed the DVD that that he had saved from the alligator scene and played it on the high-def TV. 33 seconds later, he turned the TV off and complimented the tape VERY well AND gave the director a big fat raise. My favorite part of the book was probably when Wahoo found a iguana on one of his palm trees because it was really funny and it was a great way to end the book! I would recommend this book and other books written by Carl Hiaasen including Scat, Hoot, and Flush, to people who like nature and protecting nature/the environment with a bit of comedy once in awhile.
