The first book I will review is Safe as Houses by Eric Walters. The book is based on true events of Hurricane Hazel in Southern Ontario in 1954.
This book is about two kids named David and Suzie McBride who are babysat by a teenaged girl named Lizzie. Everyday Lizzie walks the kids home from school and stays with them until their parents get back. One day it was raining really hard when she was walking with them. They get home and realize this is no ordinary storm. Susie and David's parents call and say the Streets are flooded and they are going to sleep in a hotel so she (Lizzie) has to stay with the kids over night. Soon the river beside the McBride's house is rolling over its banks and into their backyard. Next thing you know the water has raised even more and is now in their house!
My favourite part of the book is.........When David, Susie, and Lizzie are all stuck on the roof of the house and they see their neighbour's house break off its foundation and float down the river. In this moment I was feeling scared for them because I was afraid that the same thing would happen to them.
I really enjoyed reading this book and often found myself not wanting to put it down. If you like drama and adventure I recommend this book for you!
