I read Safe as Houses, by Eric Walters. This book is about Hurricane Hazel.
This book is about a babysitter who’s a teenage girl named Lizzie, and she babysits two kids named David and Susie McBride. Everyday Lizzie walks the two kids home, and she babysits them until their parents get home from work. One day Lizzie walked the kids home from school and it was pouring rain. It wouldn’t stop raining. To get to the McBride’s house they have to cross a little bridge that’s over a river, but that day the river was just coming over the bridge. When they got home, they found out that it wasn’t just an ordinary rainstorm, it was Hurricane Hazel. An hour or two after they got home from school their parents call to say that they will be running a little behind because the rain is causing accidents on the street. They see that the river has started to overflow and starting to rise on the bottom of their street. The water has slowly come up… And now it’s flooding just at the bottom of the McBrides house!
My favourite part of this book was when the water was rising fast and they had to think fast about what they were gonna do to keep them safe, dry, and to save the dog from drowning. I felt so scared for them, because Susie is about six years old and David is not much older than Susie.
I really enjoyed this book and never found myself not reading it. I recommend this book for people who often read drama and adventure books!
